Lansdowne is a large neighborhood in southeast Lexington.  It’s bordering streets are New Circle Road, Belvoir Drive, Malabu Drive, Larkin Road, Heather Way, and Melbourne Way.  The area includes residential and business properties anchored by the Lansdowne Club and The Lansdowne Shoppes.

The Lansdowne Club was established in 1958 and is currently Lexington’s oldest membership club.  In 2005, the club was in desperate need of repair and was in danger of being closed.  Ron and Troy Turner, Lexington natives, purchased the club and renovated.  During the renovation process, the decision was made to tear down the original buildings and rebuild.  In May 2006, the club was reopened as The Signature Club of Lansdowne.  Some of the amenities of the club include a ballroom (available for rental by members and the general public), a pool, water slides, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, workout center, steam rooms, and saunas.  It is also the home of the Lansdowne Gators Swim and Dive Team.  The Club’s restaurant, The Cellar is open to the public and offers a varied menu including many local favorites.  Menu and hours can be found on their website at  http://www.cellargrille.com/.

Another major establishment in the neighborhood is the Lansdowne Shoppes.  Established in the late 1960’s, the Lansdowne Shoppes are known as one of Lexington’s most enduring and successful small shopping centers.  The center remains fully leased with a waiting list.  In the beginning, there was only a gas station offering gas, repairs, and installations and still operates in its original location to this day.  Soon after, Lansdowne Liquors joined the group followed closely by Big B Dry Cleaners, Baskin Robbins, Begley Drugs, and an A&P Grocery.  Though many of the stores have moved on, many holdouts still remain in their original locations….the gas station, Baskin Robbins (same location for 42 years), and the Mousetrap (same location for 36 years).  Though the shopping center has no real room for expansion it remains a center for business in the neighborhood.  Home to two major restaurants (Sal’s and Malone’s), a specialty grocery (Fresh Market), and several upscale shops, this shopping center shows no signs of slowing down.

The Lansdowne neighborhood includes nearly 1000 homes that vary largely in style and size; however, most homes have nicely shaded lots with mature trees and well maintained sidewalks.  In addition to the shopping center and the Club, the neighborhood is home to several schools and churches.  Active since 1995, the neighborhood association has always been active in any changes or building projects in the area with an eye toward maintaining the integrity of the neighborhood.

Lansdowne is a diverse neighborhood with amazing potential around every corner.  Next time you’re speeding down Tates Creek Road, slow down and take another look at a neighborhood you may have been missing!
