One of the first developers in the area, Hugh Forbes, chose to name the city after an ancient burial mound called Little Mountain, and after the town of Stirling in Scotland. In 1792, the Kentucky Assembly passed an act that pronounced the area a township named Mt. Sterling, which is a misspelling of the intended name.
The city was originally a part of Kentucky’s thick wilderness, but developers cleared the land to build the city and farmland we see today.
