The Southland neighborhood is a fairly large neighborhood that is bordered by Pasadena Drive to the south, Clays Mill Road to the east, Lane Allen Road to the north, and Harrodsburg Road to the west. This area is a well established neighborhood with mature trees and smaller homes with spacious yards…..ideal for your starter home.Â
The Southland Association is a very active neighborhood association. The association plans several events and is constantly working to improve their neighborhood and to publicize their events. The Association will once again join together with Lexington Parks and Recreation to offer a concert series this summer held at 7PM on Tuesday evenings from May through September. The concerts are free and held on the lawn next to Collins Bowling Lanes. Concessions are available onsite, but picnic dinners are encouraged. After the concert, the audience is invited to participate in a jam session. For more information on the concert series please call 276-4692 or check their website at http://southlandjamboree.org.
Art in Motion and Lextran recently chose Southland Drive as one of eight art shelter designs located throughout Lexington for their bus stop located on Southland Drive. The winning design for the Southland Drive structure is named “Industrial Oasis” and was created by designer and sculptor John Darko and the architectural firm Pohl, Rosa, Pohl. The design features twisted rebar columns meant to mimic a tree like structure leading to a roof that houses a rain garden. Examples of Darko’s other work can be seen at the entrance to the Kentucky Theater on Main Street.
Southland Neighborhood is located very near Nicholasville Road and therefore, has easy access to much of Lexington’s dining and shopping venues. The area is also in close proximity to Central Baptist Hospital and UK. However, Southland has it’s own charm and many dining and shopping venues to offer right in their own neighborhood. The Soup Kitchen is a recent addition to the dining options in Southland and is the perfect alternative to fast food. For hours and menus, check their website at http://thesoupkitchen.com/lexington. Another neighborhood favorite is Winchell’s Restaurant & Bar. Winchell’s was voted “Best Breakfast in Town”, but they serve lunch and dinner as well. Menus and hours can be found at http://www.winchellsrestaurant.com/. For grocery shopping, Southland has a local food co-op, Good Food’s Market & CafĂ©. In addition to the grocery and cafĂ©, Good Food’s offers co-op membership and a variety of classes (http://www.goodfoods.coop/).Â
Southland Neighborhood also offers up a park with a swimming pool, playground, and ball field, several churches, and schools. Truly an up and coming neighborhood, Southland is worth a look!
