With Paragallo Animal Abuse Trial Over in NY, Thoughts Turn to the Welfare of Horses in Kentucky

| With the Kentucky Derby close on the horizon, the thoughts of many animal lovers turns to concern for horses that are so prevalent across the state of Kentucky. As in any industry or location that deals with animals, the safety and well being of the horses is, for most people, of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a few individuals who look at horse breeding and racing as just a money maker and not an industry that deals with living creatures that deserve proper treatment. |

As we've seen recently with the trial of Ernie Paragallo in New York, there are some horses that are treated very poorly by the very people who have taken on the responsibility to ensure that they're fed and sheltered properly. 177 horses that were seized from this farm were malnourished, many were infested with parasites; many horses had to be euthanized. Paragallo was found guilty of 33 counts of animal cruelty and faces consequences of up to two years in jail and $33,000 in fines; a sentence that many people around the country say is far too lightÂ
Meanwhile in Kentucky, law makers have just recently created new legislation to provide regional centers to provide care for unwanted horses and set standards for rescue organizations. This legislation is, in the opinions of many across the state, very timely; with the country in the midst of a recession, some owners are struggling to pay for the upkeep of their horses and some have even been released to fend for themselves. Opinions are split over much of the state about this potential legislation; many people feel that the current laws are adequate but are under-enforced, while others think that the new legislation is a big step in the right direction.
The Kentucky Derby really illustrates the state's drive for proper and safe treatment of horses, not only at race time but all year round, every year; the safety of the horses is a foremost priority for all of the wonderful people who help put these events on. As an area that is so entrenched in horse culture, I think that it is a safe bet that we're all interested in the welfare of the horses that help make up the character of this beautiful bluegrass state.
